Don Corey wins East Coast Championship for third year in a row.
by Charley Smart
Twelve U20s gathered
at Lake Norman NC, to compete for the Ultimate 20 East Coast Championships.
Don Corey, Al Schroeder and Chet Weisenmayer took first second a third respectively.
The competition was stiff throughout the fleet, as evidence by first place
finishes being scattered among the top five boats. Only one boat, took first
in more than one race. Positions on the course changed hands constantly.
The weather was forecasted for 5-10 knots of wind and chilly. The forecasters were only half right. Saturday saw winds in the low teens and low temperatures bottoming out in the mid 40s. Sunday saw winds in the mid to upper teens with the morning temperatures hovering near the freezing mark at 34 degrees. The temperature, along with the competition heated up throughout the day. Peter and Silvie Kitching get the award for most travelled, pulling "Low Rider" all the way from Ottawa, Canada, while two boats came down from Chicago. As always, lake Norman Yacht Club served as a magnificent host, with aU20 tailgate party on Friday evening, a great dinner on Saturday, and hot lunch ready for the racer's return on Sunday.
